Photo Hunt ~ Wheel ~

Of course objects like steering wheels and wagon wheels come to mind but what jumped out at me was when we visited our daughter and son in law in Pennsylvania and they took us to a farmers market. There was one stall that had these wheels...

Photo Hunter February 7, 2015 ~ Plaid~

Better Late Than Never BUT Better Never Late
I have been struggling with neck pain for a couple of weeks which has kept me off the computer but here is this past week's picture.

This is my favorite winter hat. You can tell how much 'love' it gets from the worn look.

The Royal Palace on Oahu
The residence of the last King and Queen of Hawaii.
Touring their residence was a rich historical lesson.

Photo Hunt ~ Sunset ~

                            This weekend's theme is Sunset.
As we were driving down the Suncoast Highway in Florida after a visit with my dad I was able to capture this picture at sunset.

Photo Hunt ~ Ginormous ~

When I looked at a map of the Hawaiian islands and the enormity of the ocean surrounding it I was astounded. This picture looking out to the horizon illustrates the vastness of the Pacific Ocean and why centuries ago when people did not travel much a population in a given location would think the earth was flat with themselves as the center. In this case they probably envisioned the water going over the edge of the earth like a waterfall.

This photo was taken on the coast of Oahu.

Photo Hunt ~ Focus and Bird ~

Since I didn't post last week I decided to do two weeks at the same time. Both pictures are from our trip to Hawaii. The first is a black swan from The Valley of the Temples Memorial Park. There were many of these lovely birds in the water but this one let me get close.

The following lovely creature was totally focused on his sun bath and paid no attention to the dozens of people taking its picture.

Photo Hunt ~ Deluxe ~

While I know some of the synonyms for deluxe I decided to look in the dictionary. One of the synonyms is sumptuous. My daughter's wedding cake was definitely that. Not only did it look sumptuous it tasted sumptuous. It was almond with streaks of raspberry throughout and presented in a deluxe setting.

Photo Hunter ~ Colours ~

When I think of 'Colours' regardless of the spelling my mind always goes to the wide range of colours available for us to use in our stitching and how to go about selecting the ones I want to use. In February on the Nuts about  Needlepoint Blog Janet Perry reviewed Gail Callahan's Color Grid. If you are interested in reading the review you can find it here. Next to it is my colorful Ort jar showing samples of the colors I have been using this year.

Photo Hunter ~Boogie~

While in Hawaii we went to the beaches where the brave body surf. Here is a young man with his boogie board getting ready to go back in and do it again.

Photo Hunt ~ Amber~

When I hear the word amber I think of the color first. With that in mind I scoured my photo albums for something amber.
First I came across this photo taken by the shore of Lake Ontario. I love the amber color edging the clouds and the amber reflection on the water.
Then I came across this picture of one of my stitching projects that makes me think of amber even though the color in the photo only has hints of amber.
It reminds me of amber because it is the home of the industrious insects that create
which really is amber in color.

Photo Hunt ~ Reflection ~

Reflections come from many sources. While in Hawaii I captured these three. This is Doris Duke's house which is now a museum. This side of the  house has a large lawn and faces the ocean. You can see the reflections of the trees on the glass doors.

Here you can see the reflection of this Buddhist temple in the water. and in my final contribution for this week below you see the reflection of man made light on the water in the cove behind our hotel.

Photo Hunt ~ Intricate~

This was a gift from my husband. He found this piece of needlework at a flea market and was intrigued by its complexity. I am not sure exactly what type of needlework it is. The technique looks like crochet done with cotton thread (almost like perle cotton) of some sort.

Photo Hunt ~ Bridges~

While there are many physical as well as conceptual types of bridges here is a picture of one of the bridges over the gorge at Cornell University.  This was from the 1970's when I was a student there.  I crossed this bridge at least twice a day for most of my college career.

It went over a gorge which was 180 feet below it and connected the residential side of campus where the women's dorms and most of the sororities were located, to the academic part of the campus. Yes, I started college before co-ed dorms and I am very happy I did.  During my junior year they first introduced co-ed dorms to the campus. I tried it and ran back to live in my sorority house. The boys were noisy, messy, and inconsiderate. I didn't want to live with any males until I got to make the choice or, in the case of brothers and sons, they were given as a gift to one.

Photo Hunt ~ Vast ~

When thinking about vast I think about knowledge, the sky, space, bodies of water, and love. The one I have taken a photo of is water. I have a great affinity for water which I find interesting since I am an Aries which is a fire sign. Perhaps it is because water is what soothes fire. Its rhythm certainly soothes me. My choice for vast is this photo I took of a surfer off the coast of Portugal. I must qualify this statement a little. This picture originally appeared in National Geographic and I took a picture of the picture in the magazine. Yes that is the crest of the wave at the top of the picture, the surfer a little to the right of center, and people watching from the top of a building. The photographer was on a mountain side some distance away.

Photo Hunt ~ Ripple ~

This is another photo I took at Doris Dukes Hawaiian home. I may not have mentioned it in my "Door" post but when Doris Dukes passed away she left her house and an endowment to maintain her house as a museum. This picture makes me wish I was back in Hawaii. The word Ripple always reminds me of  water and as you can see we have both ripples in the ocean as well as in this beautiful step pool.

Photo Hunt - Door

This is the door between the outdoor and indoor patio area of Doris Duke's (daughter of the founder of Duke University) house on Oahu. During her honeymoon she fell in love with Moorish and middle eastern architecture and design so when she built her dream home in Hawaii it was done in that style. This patio is a walled garden and totally private. The wrought iron doorway permits the ocean breezes to flow into the house.

Photo Hunt 2014 - Aqua

Here we are at the start of a new year and a new set of themes. This week's theme is aqua which always makes me think of warm ocean waters but in this case here was the view from my hotel window in Hawaii a couple of years ago.

Photo Hunt - February 18, 2012

This weeks photo hunt is point.
There are many sharp points on this beautiful Dole pineapple at the plantation on Oahu, Hawaii.
