My plan was to be done by the end of April 2022 but given what I have going on the next few days I probably will not make it. However, since I posted a status picture last week I have made substantial progress. by stitching almost 1800 stitches. I still have 908 stitches to complete according to Pattern Keeper. With it being finals week and a lot of end of term wrap up to accomplish Ill be happy if I complete 400 stitches by end of day Saturday. Of course that means I will get a wonderful project finish the first week in May.

Here is where I am as of this morning.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4266897554269172425.post-3175867579988673802022-04-22T13:30:00.003-04:002022-04-22T13:32:00.558-04:00My second Roll Over Finish

What is a Roll Over you might ask? For me roll over WIPs are those projects I started before January 1, 2022 and have carried into 2022 to be completed or worked on. So far I have only completed two of those WIPs. The Winter Cardinal Etching was the first and in February I completed a trio of Fraktur Birds by Lila's Studio.

I love the vibrant colors of these beautiful fraktur birds. I plan to add the initials of my daughter's MIL and FIL to the ones on the ends and the initials of their two sons to the center one. Both boys were born and raised in Pennsylvania and the whole family still lives there. Since fraktur is an artistic folk art created by the Pennsylvania Dutch this should be a representative piece of Americana to add to their home.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4266897554269172425.post-61036639957674818262022-04-21T13:13:00.001-04:002022-04-21T13:14:51.629-04:00My First Finish of 2022

Dear Friends,

Like many other stitchers I am attracted to new designs almost daily. Many of the projects I am attracted to are larger which has resulted in my WIP pile growing each year. I started 2022 with 23 cross stitch WIPs of the following sizes;

2 smalls

5 medium

13 large

3 BAPs

The size is calculated by adding the number of stiches in the width and length of the design and dividing it by two. My plan this year is to finish my 2 small projects, 2 medium projects, and 6 of the large projects. Below is my first finish of the year, The Winter Cardinal Etching from the Winter 2020 PNPS magazine. It was a joy to stitch and was framed and given to my husband for Valentine's Day as a remembrance of his mother who loved cardinals.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com12tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4266897554269172425.post-13969890116873254192022-04-19T17:35:00.001-04:002022-04-19T17:35:27.802-04:00What am I working on now...
If you look at my finished projects list for this year you can see that I have been busy this year. Of the seven completed projects six are smalls and five were started and finished (SAF) this year. Therefore the impact on the WIPs I rolled into this year has thus far been minor, a mere 6.25% reduction in the number of WIPs. My cross stitch WIPs are down from 23 to 21 and I still have 9 needlepoint WIPs.

So that brings us to the question of what am I working on now?

I decided in February to stop rotating my WIPs. Instead I am working on one WIP at a time until it is completed. This month I am working on America by Blackbird Designs. It is 70% completed and I plan to finish it during the first week of May. Here is what it looks like today. I am stitching it on Picture This Plus 32 count Lugana in the Heroic colorway with the called for DMC floss.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4266897554269172425.post-62749479260094644422022-01-01T20:37:00.003-05:002022-01-01T20:37:31.648-05:002022 A New Stitching Journey
<span style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; background-color: white; caret-color: rgb(51, 51, 51); color: #333333; font-family: "Coming Soon"; font-size: 22px;">I’ve never been good at journal writing but I will continue to try and improve. I love needlework and would like to leave a record of my needlework journey; the challenges, the successes, the failures. I started 2021 40 WIPs; 10 needlepoint and 30 cross stitch. My year participating in No New Starts for cross stitch was a success. I was allowed 1 new start which I used for a class called Lady Washington which was postponed from 2020 to May of 2021. As other forms of needlework were not part of NNS 2021 I was also able to take a class on Rozashi. Both classes were through the Mid- Eastern Region of EGA. I started no other new projects during 2021. Focusing a majority of my stitching time on my existing WIPs resulted in my finishing the Rozashi project, 1 needlepoint project, and 9 cross stitch projects. My plans for 2022 include participating in No New Starts 2022, which includes a cross country road trip challenge to help us complete lots of stitches. My goals for 2022 include finishing 9 cross stitch WIPs and 1 needlepoint WIP. I look forward to seeing how much I can accomplish this year both in completed projects and number of stitches. In my next post I will start sharing my 2021 finished projects. May your stitching journey be your haven of comfort and peace.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4266897554269172425.post-76922152645019977932021-08-05T16:39:00.001-04:002021-08-05T16:39:46.733-04:00Starting to Post Again
It has been quite a while since I have recorded my needlework journey on this page. I have been busy starting more projects than I finished over the last couple of years resulting in the 40 WIPs you see listed in the right hand border. The number of WIPs has become overwhelming to me so I made the choice to join the No New Starts 2021 Facebook Group at the beginning of this year. So far, except for a project that was part of an EGA Mid-Eastern Region class, that was postponed from 2020 to May of 2021 I have started no new projects this year. Focusing all my stitiching on my WIPs has resulted in my finishing 5 projects so far this year. One of my most recent finishes is The Winter is Past by BBD. I stitched it 2 over 2 on 36 count linen by Picture This Plus in the Tycho colorway and the called for floss. My plan is to continue this No New Starts Journey for the remainder of 2021 and perhaps through 2022. I look forward to seeing how many projects I can complete this year using this focused approach.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4266897554269172425.post-11600664532257738222020-05-03T23:38:00.001-04:002020-05-03T23:40:23.819-04:00Day 3 of Maynia 2020Today was a relaxed day. My husband sat in his car in a long line to buy me my coveted Latte from Starbucks. It is the first one I have had in at least three weeks and I treasured every sip. I watched a great many flosstube episodes and did very little stitiching.

However I celebrated the day with a new start; Noel by Michelle Bendy. While using the called for DMC floss I am rearranging the design a bit and modifying the year from 19 to 2020 . I will use the letters for Noel as Michelle designed them but they will all be across the top instead of two letters on either side of the cup. The fabric I am using is a 6" X 6 " square of 28 count Permin Linen in Silver Blue. This picture reflects the actual color very well. I purchased this fabric years ago from Silkweavers before Needleworkers Delight bought the company. Silkweavers would sell what they called ornament cuts. They would sell correctly sized fabrics required for the designs in the annual Just Cross Stitch Ornament magazine. This was one I never used.
Here is my progress.
I am doing a alternating scotch stitch border using NPI silks around the smyrna crosses done in perl cotton which form a square.
I have been reflecting on my stitching in order to set realistic goals. I currently have 23 WIPs and my goal is to finish all projects started prior to 2020 in the next five years. To assist me in creating a plan I put together a plannning list for the next five years and listed which WIPs I would stitch and complete each year.

At this time of new beginnings

It's a joy to wish all of you the blessings

of Health, Peace, and Happiness

throughout the coming year.

On the first day of a new year I reflect on both stitching and non- stitching goals. I actually spent quite a bit of time in December thinking about and finalizing my stitching goals. My focus this year will be to work on my WIPs. I currently have 41 WIPs. I have identified 22 to stitch and complete. I have listed all my WIPs in the column on the right and posted pictures on the page labeled 2019 WIPs.

This does not mean that I will have no new starts. I have also identified 4 larger projects and 6 Christmas ornaments that I can choose from when I feel I need a new start in my life.

I have a number of non-stitching goals but the most importantly I need to focus on how I want to lead my life in 2019. I came across the idea of selecting one word to describe the life I want to lead in 2019. My word for the year is
EXERCISE.

This year I will EXERCISE
Kindness
Compassion
Love
Simplicity
Self Discipline
Collegiality
Organization
Minimalism
Timeliness
Effectiveness
My Mind
and yes
I will exercise my body as well.

The best to all my family and friends as we depart on this amazing journey of living life in 2019.

On Friday I only did a little stitching on LHN Holiday Hometown Schoolhouse.
<span style="background-color: white; color: #1d2129; font-family: "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 14px;">

While moving through my busy day I decided WIP MAYnia is not for me. Starting Saturday I went back to working on my Year of WIP (YOW) focus piece, Forest by Satsuma Street. I will work on this until I finish it and then move onto the next YOW project. Here is where I finished up at the end of the weekend.
Last year, while working as a marshal at a golf tournament, I picked up a key ring from one of the sponsor's (Toyota) booth. I thought it would make a great scissor fob and it has as you can see below.
I thought the guitar was cute but never realized until my husband commented that it was also a bottle opener. Not being a beer drinker it never occurred to me. However, since then I have acquired other key chains to use as scissor fobs which i will share on another day.
I am no longer a member of this group but some of us in the Friday Off the Grid FB group are doing WIP MAYnia instead. This is stitching on a different WIP everyday for the first 18 days of May. Since my goal this year is to finish a dozen WIPs this is a great way to make progress towards that goal. My May 1st WIP was Forest by Satsuma Street.

It's been a long time since I've posted here. Life is busy for all
of us and we need to make time for those things that are important. It comes
down to priorities and I was focused on other things. I saw an article posted on Facebook today which said it is easier to put in a 100% effort than 99% because when you give a task focused and consistent effort it results in an accomplishment versus agonizing about not getting it done. Here is a toast to finishing this tag.

Question 7 - What is my
favorite TV show?

I tend to love hospital
dramas best but my favorite show is "This is Us". I love the premise
of the show and its ability to focus on many of the important social questions
of the day.

Question 8 - What is my
favorite book?

This is a very tough question
since I like to read. I read fiction predominantly. I read a wide range of
genres but I like mysteries best. I recently read The Cuckoo's Calling by
Robert Galbraith (AKA J.K Rowling) and I intend to read the rest of the
series. I am reading one now called The Girl Before by J.P. Delaney and it is
very intriguing so far. The answer to a question like this should be
about a book that had a great impact on me. Most of what I read has little
lasting impact. It is purely entertainment. A book that had impact would be
Malcom Gladwell's "Outliers". This book looks at the parameters that generate success. Often it is not what we think. You walk away from this book understanding that timing in combination with hard work and circumstance work together to generate success. Malcom Gladwell is a great storyteller in the non- fiction category. His books illuminate and enlighten us.

Question 9 - What is your favorite music?

This is also difficult in that I love all kinds of music but if you put my feet to the fire to select a certain type over all others it would be classical in the era of Beethoven, Mozart, and Handel. My son's second grade teacher use to call this brain music and play it for her class while they worked on their reading and math. I play classical music in my office while I work and also when I stitch. It relaxes me and helps me to focus and concentrate on what I am doing. As much as I love classical I also love Motown, Yanni's music, and my newest favorite is the soundtrack to Hamilton.

Question 10 - What one word best describes you.

No one is one dimensional but one word that could be used to describe me throughout my life is persistent. What ever I put my mind to accomplish I persist no matter how difficult the task. I find it interesting that of all the words that describe aspects of me that this is the one I choose to best represent who I am. I think it would be more telling to ask others to pick a single word that describes you to understand what others see as your strongest traits. I wonder how many of us would pick a negative word to describe ourselves? While we might not others might. So while I believe persistence to be my biggest strength my biggest weakness is procrastination.

If you take time to give more than a superficial answer to these questions it does reveal a lot about you.

Have a wonderful day doing what you love.

Question 5. What other hobbies do I have besides cross stitch?
My hobbies beside cross stitch include:

Counted canvas needlepoint

Painted Canvas needlepoint

Knitting

Sewing

Reading

Question 6. What is my favorite movie?

This is a hard question as I love movies. I love adventure movies like the Indiana Jones , Star Wars and Star Trek movies. I also like romantic movies, classic movies and old movies. But naming a favorite is very difficult and I might give a different answer on a different day. My favorite movie is "It's a Wonderful Life" with Jimmy Stewart. This is my favorite because it is a story that demonstrates the impact each of us has on everyone we touch and even indirectly to those we don't. Everyone, every life has value.

Getting to Know Your Needle Worker

3. Do you have any children? Grandchildren?

I have three children boy, girl, boy) who have all been launched into the adult world. Raising them was a wonderful time in my life but interacting with them as adults is absolutely delightful. It is so much fun to find you have interests in common and to have conversations about books, politics, current events, travel, sports, and most fun of all child rearing. The oldest is already discussing retirement planning and his dad and I are not yet retired. They are accomplished adults who have each taken unique paths into adulthood.

The oldest has always been in love with technology. We bought him his first computer before he was five and by fourteen he was building networks in his room and learning all he could about Macs. He is a wonderful self motivated learner. Because of that college was not his cup of tea when he was 18. Now in his mid 30's having built a career in IT he is pursuing his undergraduate degree online while working and raising his two sons with his wonderful wife.

The middle child is our artist with a type A personality. From the time she could hold a crayon she has communicated in pictures. She would often leave her dad and I pictures expressing her discontent or joy at that time. True to form she pursued music as well as art and we have had the joy of listening to her beautiful voice as well as hanging her art in our home. She minored in English and received a BFA in Art. Her real passion and what she she received her MFA in is animation. She is a Disney fan and did two internships at Disney during her college years. While she has made and participated in a few short animated films she has a practical streak and works for a health insurance company. She is now a mother of a wonderful little boy, nicked name by my husband as The Little One.

So do we have Grandchildren ? Yes three wonderful grandsons aged 16, 10 and 1.

So what about child number three you might ask? We call him our California child because he is so laid back. He is the kind, gentle, and an advocate for the underdog child. He is a renaissance man in that he was a heavy weight wrestler, a member of the chess team, and a member of the competition chorus( a baritone I believe) in high school. He longed to be a big brother and became one for one of his friend's younger siblings when she went off to college since he attended college close to home. He too is a techie but unlike his brother his focus is on the software side if technology. While he has a significant other they are taking their time about marriage as they are in their mid twenties.

My three children are blessed with talent, intelligence, and wonderful partners in life.

Now the question that does not get asked directly is am I married? The answer is a resounding yes. I have been blessed to have married my perfect match. We have been married for 33 years and have weathered a few bad times and enjoyed the many good ones we have been blessed with together.

4. Do you have any pets?

At this time we do not have any pets. Over the course of our marriage we have had a salt and pepper miniature schnauzer named Chivas and when he passed away at 15 we went to the animal shelter and adopted a wonderful kitten who we named Nala. Nala left us a little over a year ago at the age of 18.

While my husband and I loved having the pets in our life we are in the phase of our life where it's nice to just pick up and go without having to plan for children and pets. So for now we have decided no more pets.

Fancy Works Retreat

<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;">What is a retreat all about? One dictionary definition is " the act of withdrawing, as into safety or privacy; retirement; seclusion. ... a place of refuge, seclusion, or privacy" . While I have been to religious retreats that fit this definition precisely a stitching retreat is slightly different. I agree that I withdrew from my normal everyday life and I did go to a place that was secluded and safe. However, a stitching retreat is about sharing and stitching with other stitchers. At the end of March the Fancy Works Needlework shop in Indiana hosted a retreat for about 60 stitchers at the Canyon Inn in McCormick State Park in Spencer, Indiana. We stitched, talked, took finishing classes from the Twisted Stitcher, Vonna, and had the opportunity to shop at Fancy Works with a gift certificate that was included in our registration. The retreat was an overwhelming success. We were treated royally with gifts appearing at our stitching spot multiple times a day. Most meals were included and the Inn prepared wonderful food. The best part is that by the last day I was relaxed and felt so much better than when I arrived. After all isn't that the purpose of a retreat ? To allow you time and space to relax, reflect and rejuvenate? I think so and I look forward to attending again next year. If you are interested in considering this retreat the web site with all the information is located at https://www.fancyworksretreat.com/
A New Start

Many of my fellow stitchers from Facebook have taken to creating Flosstube videos on You Tube to share their stitching journey. After considerable thought I have decided to continue with my written blog rather than create videos. While the written word may not be as engaging to most, it is a more comfortable medium for me. 2016 and the beginning of 2017 have been challenging so I invested very little time in sharing my stitching activities through this blog. So I thought I would begin again.

What better way to start than to write responses to the "Get to Know your Needle Worker" tag. I thought I would cover a couple of questions in each post and perhaps writing about other stitching experiences as well.

Getting to Know Your Needle Worker

1. Where do you live?

I live in a small suburban town in upstate New York on a quiet tree lined street which is part of a fairly typical American housing subdivision. Our house is a center entrance two story colonial with a beautiful 1/4 acre back yard. I have lived in this community for 37 years. I met and married my dear husband here; raised a family, built two careers and now enjoy the pleasure of grandchildren. And while I often pine for warmer weather I feel bound to this place in a way that makes it hard to leave.

2. What do you do for a living?

I am currently a university professor and have been one for 19 years. My primary responsibility is teaching computing subjects in the networking, systems administration, and security sub-disciplines. I also have the responsibility to develop curriculum, mentor graduate students, and currently I serve as program coordinator for the degree program I teach in which is Computing and Information Technology. It is my second career and is a rich and engaging one. I love working with the students. While we are there to engage them intellectually in the classroom our responsibility extends beyond that to helping them transform from children into adults,

What Project Am I Really Excited About?

I currently have 23 WIPs so I have lots to be excited about. But the one I am most excited about is something I am stitching for my daughter for Mother's Day. I will not share it here and now in case she should happen to read my blog even though I believe she is much too busy to chasing TLO ( The Little One) to read blogs anymore. The next project I am excited about is one I started at a retreat I attended at the end of March. I will share my wonderful experiences at retreat and my new project start in my next post.

To quote Danielle (Stitcherista) I wish all of you Happy Stitching and Happy Stashing

Starting on January 1, 2017 I started a Facebook SAL called 10 a Day. The objective was to select a new design or a WIP that we could finish in a year if we stitched 10 stitches every day. I decided to pick two WIPs I have avoided stitching. The first is a miniature needlepoint rug the other is Teresa Wentzler's 2nd day of Christmas. Since I am doing the 12 Days of Christmas on one piece of fabric and the 3rd day is right next to the 2nd day I decided to start the the 3rd Day of Christmas a a third 10 a day project. It is amazing how much progress can be made with just 10 stitches a day. Below I will show you my starting point for the year and how far I have come in two months.
However, I had only stitched the first band and decided to complete it so I could post the picture for those who took my class. Here is the completed piece. Now I just need to make a bell pull out of it.
New years day is a great day to be peaceful and reflect about the year we have completed as well as how and what we want to change for the new year we are beginning. For my stitching I plan to

improve my stitching technique

learn new stitches

finish stitching at least half my WIPs

end the year with no more WIPs than I started the year with

learn how to do professional quality finishing

stitch projects from my stash (except for the ANG class I already committed to)

buy additional supplies only if needed to stitch projects in my stash

stitch everyday because it brings me great joy and peace

I celebrated the new year by spending the first day of the year watching movies on Netflix and stitching. I focused my stitching on two projects: First I worked on stitching a Bell Pull Sampler I designed to commemorate a Cross Stitch Retreat where I taught a class on specialty stitches. The sampler incorporates all the stitches I taught and was given to the students so they could practice the stitches and create their own needlework piece to commemorate the retreat.

I also wanted to have a new start for the year. In December I was introduced to a designer I had not heard of before, Amy Mitten. She designs a variety or reproduction samplers and her own line of hand dyed silk threads in authentic colors. The design I ordered as a Christmas present to myself is called "With the Same MO #2". To celebrate the beginning of the new year I put in the first row of stitches.

The question for this month is: Which designer has inspired you to stitch the greatest number of designs and why do you think that is?

Since I do both cross stitch and needlepoint I will list two designers one for each major style of needle work I love to do. For cross stitch the designer that has influence me the most and taught me the most about the specialty stitches and techniques used in cross stitch is Teresa Wentzler. You can see pictures of all her designs by starting on this web page: http://www.twdesignworks.com/Designs/index.html. I have stitched at least a dozen of her designs and have four large ones on my WIP list. They are challenging butabsolutely stunning when completed. I started stitching with one of designs called "Stretch" (one of her free designs) and went from there.

Needlepoint is a little more difficult to pick one designer but I would have to say Laura Perin's designs really engaged me in needlepoint even though I didn't start with her designs. I like gemetric patterns the best and I loved many of her designs especially the ones that mimic quilt patterns. From that start I have branched out to other designers such as Nancy's Needle and Gay An Rodgers but have also learned to work with to painted canvas. Below you will see two examples of needlepoint both os which are charted designs.

Our fall in upstate NY was lovely and all the fall leaves inspired me to start a new piece on November 1st and I finished it on November 27th. The design was from the November/December issue of Needlepoint Now Magazine and it is called Winter Scenery. While quite beautiful I used fall colors instead of the original blue colorway and call it Fall Leaves. All threads were #5 DMC Perle Cotton. The design calls for # 8 but I wanted more coverage.

Additionally I also completed a design created for EGA and ANG members by Mary Waldsmith called Elegant Holiday Tree. All three sections use the same #12 Kreink metallic but each section uses a different off white thread. The bottom section uses Caron WaterColours, the middle section uses RG's Neon Rays, and the top section called for Caron Impressions but I used Pepperpot Silk instead.

So where was I on my stitching on October 27th. If you look at the right had colum of my blog you can see I have quite an extensive list of WIPs. Instead of getting smaller which was my plan on January 1st it has continued to grow as I find new and exciting stitching opportunities. I have added six new starts this month (London, Charizard, Noel, Retreat Band Sampler, White Ornament, Martina's Geometric) and completed two projects. So the WIP list grows to 24.
My two finishes include a free design from Paine Free Crafts called a Golden Baby Dragon. This was stitched on 16 count aida cloth with DMC threads. You can find this cute design here: http://www.painefreecrafts.com/product-category/cross/free/. I stitched this in honor of my new grandson who is currently warm and safe with his mother but will join the rest of us in March. The TLO above the dragon stands for "the Little One" which is what my DH calls him.

I also finished a painted canvas cupcake for my son who has a great imagination regarding efficient techniques to frost cupcakes. His wife and every other female member of his family was in stitches as he described his technique. Our led us to picture the ultimate disaster that would ensue with his technique. However he gets a lot of points for trying to come up with ways to make his wife's life easier.

I spent a good amount of time in October preparing for a class I taught on specialty stitches at the Cross stitch Club Retreat on October 17th. I designed the piece for the class and put together 72 kits which included fabric, needle minders that I made, DMC floss, a thread sorter card, the design layout, stitch instructions, and finishing instructions to complete the design as a bell pull. Experience is a great teacher and I learned a lot through this experience. I also had a fantastic time teaching the class and I had a great group of students.

However, the only picture I have is of the threads I included to stitch the design. I charted the design but did not stitch it before the class. I will never do that again. While the students took home the design, we didn't stitch it during class. Instead we used the fabric (28 count Ivory Lugana) to practice each of the specialty stitches included in the design. While I had this all on PowerPoint slides the room set up did not allow for projection. Fortunately I took samples of work that I had done so the students could see what the stitches looked like completed. I am now stitching the design after the fact. When I have completed it I will post it and updated stitching directions for the class and others to download. I hope to teach needlework classes again and will am currently preparing proposals for the next set of classes I would like to teach at next year's retreat.

The question this month is: Are there any fibers or materials used in stitching that you are nervous to try? I would not say nervous. There are definitely fibers that don't appeal to me and therefore I don't try them because I either don't like the texture or weight of them. Theses are usually fibers that are fuzzy in nature. There are some that I would like try that I haven't tried because the right stitching opportunity has not come up yet. These include very velvet and silk ribbon.

Until next month may the stitching force be with each and every one of you.
